In many regards calling is similar to checking: It is a somewhat Passive refusal to increase the stakes of the game. As with checking, there are times where it is appropriate to Call with a powerful hand in order to disguise its strength (in the hope of making a large amount of money on later streets). However, where calling differs from checking, is that it implies a greater degree of strength. This is because when we call, we have made an assessment of the strength of our hand and come to the conclusion that our hand has a strong enough potential to win that we are willing to invest more money in the pot. A decision to Call should always carry with it an assessment of risk versus reward but a decision to Check can simply be the result of having a nothing-hand and no good reason to bluff.
